A woman leaves Venice for a grand English manor in this gothic romance from a New York Times–bestselling author—perfect for fans of Mary Stewart and Victoria Holt.

Haunted by her scandalous past, Lavinia Hurst accepts a position as companion to young invalid Flora Meryon. But something is very wrong at Winterwood, the Meryons’ isolated estate by the sea. And when Flora suddenly becomes heiress to a large fortune, Lavinia realizes that her charge is in mortal danger.

It becomes clear that someone is determined not to let Flora live to see her inheritance. Then letters begin arriving from a dead relative. Do ghosts haunt Winterwood? Or is this the specter of living greed? Determined to thwart the deadly plan, Lavinia risks her own life to protect Flora’s, while fighting her powerful desire for Flora’s father, Daniel, a man tormented by his own demons.

Rich in atmosphere and mystery, Winterwood is Dorothy Eden at her gothic best.

This was written in 1967 by Dorothy Eden (1912-1982), who was born in New Zealand and moved to England in 1954. She was a popular writer of Gothic and romantic suspense, and, although somewhat dated, her novels hold up well for me as reads in 2015.

Eden wrote her books from 1940 to 1982 and was more or less a contemporary of Victoria Holt (1906-1993) and Mary Stewart (1916-2014). Of the three, Stewart was the superior romantic suspense writer, but I have a soft spot for the Victorian Gothics of Holt and Eden.

WINTERWOOD is a classic Gothic romance. Heroine pretty much adrift in life, penniless and homeless. In Venice, while companion to a rather unpleasant cousin, she meets a British family on vacation and is hired as companion to their young daughter, who is wheelchair-bound after a horse-riding accident.

Naturally, to follow Gothic guidelines, the hero is dark, somewhat brooding (not as much as is usual), and his beautiful (of course) wife is very emotionally unstable and erratic in behavior. There's an eccentric elderly aunt living in Venice who wishes to move back to Winterwood (the family's estate in England) with them to die there and her money is coveted by certain characters and her will, it is hoped, will favor them.

There are interesting dynamics between the elderly aunt and the disabled young girl, and between our heroine and the girl. There's also a mysterious cousin of the hero's wife who pops up in Venice and then again at Winterwood and the reader wonders at the relationship between him and the wife. Secrets seem to be abundant. Even our heroine has a past that she doesn't want revealed to anyone. There are possible attempts on someone's life, romantic entanglements, maybe a ghost, and a bit of a twist at the end. All good Gothic fun.

As is the case with this genre, the story is fairly predictable, but the settings (Venice and the English estate Winterwood) are interesting and well described and the Victorian time period makes one forgiving of any outdated storylines.

Winterwood edition by Dorothy Eden Romance eBooks Reviews

I recently discovered this Author and have been reading ALL of her books, she is truly talented and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the story. Highly recommend her for Suspense, Mystery and Romance Books.
It is a mystery romance and reminds me of gothic Victoria Holt books. This is an old fashioned romance; although, it might offend some as the employer is married and his daughter’s caretaker and he fall in love but only a shared kiss occurs one time. There is a HEA. It was a teen favorite of mine and is still good.
The triumvirate of great British Gothic authors of the last century is made up of Stewart, Holt and Eden. How wonderful that their books are being digitized for a new generation to discover and enjoy

Winterwood stars a heroine with a Dark Secret that would ruin her if it was exposed. Far from being a Mary Sue, though, Lavinia Hurst gives as good as she gets; whether fending off the attentions of an unwanted suitor, challenging her crippled young charge to walk again, or defending herself against the dark conspiracy afoot in the stately mansion of Winterwood. She's a pleasure to spend a few hours with. This book rates 4 and a half stars from me.

Despite the age of this novel, it holds up to a reread forty years later. Ms. Eden's atmospheric descriptions skillfully evoke foreboding, danger and romance, and her plotting is devilishly complicated. I'm happy to leave the current crop of UF and shifters for a while and return to a good old fashioned character driven Gothic. Yay that these are being reissued!
I had read this years ago and rereading it now was such a pleasure. It's the classic Gothic mystery/love story of a young nurse with a tragic past who works for a family with secrets. There is the crippled daughter, the rich old aunt, a fortune to be had, attempted murder. The plot creaks a bit in spots but overall it is an excellent read.
There are few reads better than those written by the divine Dorothy Eden. Traditional Gothic plots are fairly predictable and Ms. Eden's particular talent was in creating independent heroines who overcome adversity amid a string of complex, evil or greedy characters whose ulterior motives remain masterfully hidden until the final pages. In the 1969 tale of Winterwood, the penniless Lavinia Hurst, a victim of a cruel fate that resulted in her brief incarceration, has fled London for Venice in search of anonymity and a new life. By chance she meets and forms a covert attachment to a wealthy and married man, Daniel Meryton, who is traveling with his emotionally disturbed wife and children, one of whom is a precocious child, Flora. Indulged by her father since the accident that left Flora confined to a wheelchair, she begs Daniel Meryton to hire Lavinia as her governess once they return to Winterwood, their grand and isolated English estate. There are far too many reasons why Lavinia should run from the proposition, far more secretive reasons why she cannot resist.

On a romantic moonlight gondola ride with the attractive and misunderstood Daniel Meryton, the reluctant Lavinia allows herself to be seduced in to accepting the governess position. Things heat up quickly as Lavinia endures verbal assaults from Daniel's beautiful but sickly wife Charlotte, who resents Lavinia and the position she assumes at Winterwood. Blackmail, evil schemes, ghosts, twists and turns, this story contains all the requisite elements that devotees of Gothic literature crave and devour late in to the night. That being said, this book is not without issues and one of the most glaring was my dislike of the heroine from the start. In truth, the wife Charlotte was a more compelling and sympathetic character and my opinion of the two changed little over the course of the book.

If this were another author's work instead of Dorothy Eden, it may have been easier to criticize the weak points of this book. But Ms. Eden was a pioneer of the Gothic genre and has long ago demonstrated her mastery of the writing craft. Readers may find portions of the story archaic compared to the societal norms toward women in the twenty-first century. In contrast, the author's decision to include an illicit romance in this book must have raised a few eyebrows in the more socially conservative era of the 1960s. All in all, readers of Winterwood will be rewarded with a timeless story, to revisit again and again.
